Street cleaning

Help make the streets cleaner, find out how to report litter, dead animals, fouling or traffic accident debris.

Litter includes everything from crisp packets to cigarette butts.

We provide and maintain litter bins to try prevent litter in public places and arrange for these to be emptied on a regular basis. Roads are swept on a regular frequency to help keep them clean.

We also remove the following items from public areas:

  • drug related litter
  • vomit
  • broken glass
  • dead animals including foxes
  • traffic accident debris 
  • dog fouling/mess

How soon we will remove litter?

All litter should be removed within 48 hours of being reported drug related litter should be removed within one hour of it being reported.

You can help

  • Ensure you take your litter home or use the street litter and recycling bins provided.
  • Never put your household waste on the street before collection; ensure it's on your own property until collection day.
  • Clear up after your dog by using the dedicated dog waste bins throughout the borough.

Litter and the Law

Litter is illegal. People caught littering can receive an on-the-spot fine called a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of £80. If a person is taken to court the fine could be up to £2,500.

Full details concerning payment and discount rates that may apply are given on the FPN, but for your information online payment is not yet available, so payment can be made by telephone using credit/debit card, cash using the payment kiosk in main reception at the Civic Centre or by sending in a postal order.
