Road traffic noise

Information on this noise source.

The council cannot normally take action to deal with noise from road traffic. Traffic is of course made up of a variety of vehicle types using the road at the same time. The resulting noise is complex, irregular and constantly changing. Noise from individual road vehicles is mainly controlled by European Legislation.

For new roads or widened roads, the legislation provides for the provision of sound insulation to affected residential properties. Through traffic management and planning the council will strive toward a reduction of noise wherever possible. This may be achieved by replacement of old road surfaces with low noise surfaces. The borough has issued a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on Noise which contains a relevant section under Key Point 3: Road Traffic Noise.

For road traffic noise levels in the borough see the following maps.
