Naming ceremonies

We can offer naming ceremonies to families who wish to celebrate the birth of a new baby or who wish to welcome adoptive or stepchildren into a new relationship.

A naming ceremony is a very special way of welcoming a child's safe arrival into the world, and is an opportunity for you, as parents, to declare before your family and friends your commitment and love, as you welcome your child into your family. It is an occasion for everyone to feel involved as they pledge their love and support for your child's future.

About the ceremony

The ceremonies are secular so do not contain religious references. Parents wishing to have a religious ceremony should contact their local church or religious community.

The Register Office staff will assist in designing a ceremony to suit the individual needs of the family. The format can include a welcoming of the child into the family, an announcement of the chosen names, promises of commitment and support for the child into adult life and the choice of other adults, and/or grandparents, prepared to offer a supporting role to the parents.

A selection of poems or readings may also be included in the ceremony, together with a special gift to the child.

A souvenir record of the ceremony will be signed and presented during the event.
