The role of the Mayor

Every year in May a Councillor is elected as the Mayor of Hillingdon and becomes Hillingdon's ceremonial and civic head for the year.

First citizen

The Mayor is the First Citizen of the borough. This means that only HM The Queen, members of the Royal Family and the Lord Lieutenant take precedence over the Mayor at events in the borough.

The Mayor's correct title is 'The Worshipful the Mayor of Hillingdon'.

The Mayor attends many different types of functions throughout the borough of Hillingdon, such as official opening of events or new facilities, talking to clubs and societies, and visiting schools.

Please note: To help keep our residents safe and in line with government advice on the coronavirus, the Mayor will not be attending any more events during his mayoral year.

One of the Mayor's most important tasks is to chair council meetings, to keep order and to ensure the rules of debate are being followed.  Council meetings are held throughout the year in Council Chamber.

The Mayor also hosts visits to the Mayor's Parlour from various organisations and is always happy to receive a request for a visit.

The Mayor is responsible, in a non-political way, for furthering the interests of the borough whenever and wherever an appropriate occasion arises.

The Mayor has the role of receiving Members of the Royal Family during any official visits to the Borough and hosting Citizenship Ceremonies.

The Mayor also acts as host to distinguished visitors to the borough including national representatives of various organizations and foreign visitors, especially those from our twin towns of Schleswig and Mantes la Jolie.
