Military presence - armed forces in Hillingdon

Hillingdon has a large population of serving forces personnel, many of whom live and work at or near RAF Northolt or the Northwood Permanent Joint Headquarters.

All three branches of the armed forces are represented at these establishments. The military personnel who are Hillingdon residents are also employed at other MOD sites in and around London.

RAF Northolt is home to around 1000 serving personnel, plus their families. There are around 360 children with a parent serving in the armed forces in Hillingdon schools.

Hillingdon also has large numbers of volunteer reservists and cadets. Nationally around 50,000 men and women provide the reserves of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, the Army, and the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Giving up spare time for training to work alongside the Regular Forces on exercise and on operations.

London also has around 14,000 young people who are members of cadet groups. Sea cadets, Army cadets and Air Training Corps offer training designed to promote teamwork, reliability and leadership with the goal of good citizenship. This is achieved through friendship, adventure and fun.
