Knowledge about population characteristics and changes is important for various reasons, for example:

  • age, sex and ethnic composition of a population helps to determine the need for specific services eg children's, maternity

  • older people's services

  • specific population groups have higher prevalence of certain conditions and changes in the numbers of those populations can indicate increase or decrease in demand for certain treatments and care

  • changes in birth-rates, inwards and outwards migration and expansion of colleges and universities can impact on need for services within a short period and hence need to be monitored
