What is the Youth Council?

Hillingdon Youth Council represents the young people of Hillingdon and provides a voice for young people who live, study or work in the borough.

Hillingdon Youth Council represents the young people of Hillingdon and provides a voice for young people who live, study or work in the borough.

It is a forum in which young people can discuss and exchange their views and opinions about issues affecting young people.

The youth council is made up of a variety of young people from across the borough and from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds between the ages of 11 to 19 (up to 25 years with SEND). The core group is elected through an annual election process across schools in Hillingdon, but all are welcome to get involved.

Youth Council works in partnership with UK Youth Parliament and London Youth Assembly.

Meetings

Every Monday (term time) at the Fountains Mill Young People's Centre, 81 High Street, Uxbridge, UB8 1JR, between 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

The group are involved in a variety of activities including:

  • organising and running the annual Hillingdon Youth conference
  • carrying out project work on issues raised by young people
  • increasing people's understanding of different cultures to reduce racism and racial discrimination
  • liaising with key people within the council to raise concerns of young people and inform the council's strategic planning and decision making process
  • liaising with key agencies that provide services for young people and giving feedback and recommendations on proposed projects
  • enable Hillingdon's two members of the UK Youth Parliament to receive feedback from young people, and vice versa
  • enable Hillingdon's two members of the London Youth Assembly to receive feedback from young people, and vice versa

Why become a member?

It may sound like the Hillingdon Youth Council is a very formal group and only for the most politically minded, but it's not! Most members join because they want to show adults what young people think, want and what they can achieve. Young people find that being part of the Youth Council helps them develop their skills, knowledge and self-confidence whilst making new friendships.
