Adoption Support Fund

The Adoption Support Fund (ASF) has been introduced to help adoptive and special guardianship families of children who were previously looked after in England.

This is to enable access to therapy services as and when they are needed in their child's life.

For further information please email the Permanence Team at PermanenceTeam@Hillingdon.gov.uk

Who is eligible for the ASF?

The fund is available to all children who are subject to a SGO or Adoption Order:

  • up to 18 years old (25 with a statement of special educational needs or education, health and care plan)
  • adopted or subject to
    • SGO from care and not just newly adopted or
    • SGO children
    • adopted or SGO from care in England, or
    • living in England having moved from care in Wales
It won't, as with several other elements of adoption support, be applicable to inter-country adoptions or non-agency adoptions.

The process for getting funding

Step 1

Step 1   We will consider if therapeutic support is needed, what kind and if this can be paid for by the fund
Step 2We will work with you to look at the support that is available
Step 3We will apply directly to the ASF on your behalf
Step 4              If approved, the ASF will transfer the money to us so we can buy the support on your behalf.

What can the fund be used for?

The fund will pay for therapeutic services that we don't currently provide.

These include:

  • Therapeutic parenting courses
  • Dyadic developmental psychotherapy
  • Theraplay
  • Filial therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Drama therapy

  • Sensory integration therapy

  • CAMHS assessment, multidisciplinary assessment including education and health, cognitive and neuropsychological assessment, other mental health assessment.

It also includes therapies such as those mentioned above, when provided as part of a short break, course or package or when commissioned pre-adoption but delivery extends post-adoption order.

Therapeutic support is also available where your child is under a Section 20 order and there is a possibility of the child being reunited with you.
