Action you can take to prepare in advance

Preventing floods is very difficult, however reducing the impact to your home or business and reducing your insurance premiums can be increased by preparing for them.

  • Create a personal flood plan of what you should do and who to contact. It's good to work together as a community.
     
  • There are recommendations on how to go about this to set up a Flood Action Group on the National Flood Forum website and the government website providing flood plan guidance for communities establishing how and where you would go in a flood event and how long you might need to evacuate.
     
  • Purchase flood protection products. National Flood Forum (Blue Pages) - an independent directory of flood products and those offering services.
     
  • There is also action all residents can do to reduce their risk for example by ensuring hard surfaces are permeable and introduce sustainable drainage.
     
  • Know the drainage system within your property boundary and check it clear of blockages.
     
  • Ensure that all development has an appropriate Flood Risk Assessment where needed with any planning application submitted, please see the government website for information.
