Hillingdon Council launches annual gardening competition

News release: 23/3/18 - Hillingdon Council officially launched its annual Hillingdon in Bloom competition on Tuesday 20 March at the Rural Activities Garden Centre, Hillingdon.

Hillingdon in Bloom launch 2018

Hillingdon In Bloom is a free gardening competition open to all residents and businesses in the borough, and the council is encouraging people of all ages to enter the many different categories on offer.

Local gardening enthusiast Julie Bye, from Hillingdon, attended the launch event with her son Dean and she is looking forward to entering her display in to Hillingdon in Bloom this year.

Julie said: "Gardening is my passion and my hobby. My nan got me into gardening from the age of five, and I now have a large garden of my own so I'm looking forward to entering the competition for the third year running. My son Dean has special needs and he loves growing vegetables in the garden, which he will enter in the Autumn Show in September."

Councillor Jonathan Bianco, Cabinet Member for Finance, Property and Business Services said: "We're delighted to launch this year's Hillingdon in Bloom competition at the Rural Activities Garden Centre, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to seeing the entries this year.

"Our gardening and growing competitions are designed to improve the local environment through the imaginative use of flowers, trees, shrubs and landscaping, and instill a sense of pride in the community.

"Whether you have a small windowsill that can be revamped with a potted plant, or you're working on a bigger gardening project in the community, we'd like to encourage each and every resident to join in the fun - and get growing for Hillingdon!"

All applications for Hillingdon in Bloom must be submitted by Saturday 30 June. The winners will be announced at the Autumn Show on Saturday 15 September at the Great Barn, Ruislip.
