Residents encouraged to take action and unite against dementia

New release: 17/5/18 - Hillingdon Council and Alzheimer's Society are encouraging residents to take action and unite against dementia this Dementia Action Week (21-27 May).

On 23 and 24 May, charity staff, the council's Sports and Physical Activities team and volunteers will be manning an information stall at Intu Shopping Centre in Uxbridge to encourage local residents to take actions, big or small, to make a difference to people affected by dementia. The two-day event will also feature art and singing.

Elsewhere in the borough, Hillingdon libraries will be hosting a series of events in support of Dementia Action Week, including dementia-friendly film screenings, Dementia Friends' coffee mornings and 'magic table' sessions, which give people living with dementia and their carers the chance to play a series of physically, mentally and socially stimulating table-based light games (pictured). The council will also be taking dementia groups on a special tour of the newly-opened RAF Battle of Britain Bunker Visitor Centre on 30 May.

Cllr Philip Corthorne, Cabinet Member for Social Services, Housing, Health and Wellbeing at Hillingdon Council, said: "We must continue to support the more than 2,800 people who are currently living with the dementia in Hillingdon and their carers.

"I encourage everyone to play their part, whether it's becoming a Dementia Friend, volunteering, or simply sharing information to increase awareness."

David Morris, Operations Manager for Alzheimer's Society in North West London, said: "In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes and almost everyone knows someone whose life has been affected. Yet too many people face the condition alone without adequate support.

"People with dementia and carers have shared actions with us that will make a difference, from 'invite me out, friends still mean the world to me' to 'take time to listen, I can still teach you a thing or two.'

"So join us on 23 and 24 May to take action and unite against dementia and help people affected to feel included in their community and able to live the life they want."
