Council launches innovative new coffee cup recycling scheme

News release: 25/5/18 - Hillingdon Council and its partners have implemented various plastic recycling schemes to minimise the use of plastic across the borough and the council has now taken a major step towards encouraging residents to become more environmentally friendly, by installing state-of-the-art recycling bins solely for the disposal of takeaway coffee cups.

Boris Johnson and Cllr Puddifoot launch new coffee cup recycling bins

News release: 25 May 2018

Hillingdon Council is the first council in the UK to partner with Simply Cups, a service dedicated to recycling paper and plastic cups and turning them into second-life materials.

Recent research shows a staggering 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups are thrown away in the UK every year, but less than 1 per cent are recycled*. With the highest number of award-winning parks and open spaces in the UK, the council is keen to break this trend and protect its local environment.

The new scheme was launched at the Civic Centre in Uxbridge on Friday 25 May by Councillor Ray Puddifoot, Leader of Hillingdon Council, and Boris Johnson, MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

The bins will be located at the council's main Civic Centre in Uxbridge and at libraries across Hillingdon as well as at the Battle of Britain Bunker Exhibition and Visitor Centre. Residents can pop into any of the venues to recycle takeaway cups, and each bin is dedicated to separating the lids, cups and liquids to allow them to be recycled efficiently.

Cllr Ray Puddifoot, Leader of Hillingdon Council, said: "The damage to our environment caused by plastics and non-recyclable coffee cups is a major concern and if we can try to alleviate this problem at a local level, and others do the same, it will go some way to making a positive difference. We already offer free weekly recycling, garden waste and refuse collections for all residents, and all of our libraries provide discounts on hot drinks to anyone using a reusable cup."

Boris Johnson, MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, said: "I'm delighted at Hillingdon Council's focus on protecting the environment, and introducing these recycling bins is just one of the innovative steps being taken to encourage Hillingdon to be a green borough!

"Small changes to reduce plastic consumption and increasing the availability of recycling bins for plastic and paper cups, provide residents of Hillingdon the opportunity to be more environmentally friendly and take individual responsibility for looking after the environment.

"The government is making great strides in putting in place protections for the environment but it's individual actions by local councils and residents that will also make a big difference to our planet in the future."
