Celebrate Father's Day at a special Battle of Britain Bunker aeroplane event

News release: 5/6/18 - A special Discover Aeroplanes event will be held at the Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge to mark Father's Day on Sunday 17 June, from 10am to 4.30pm.

The new Battle of Britain Bunker Exhibition and Visitor Centre was officially opened in March, following a £6 million investment from Hillingdon Council. The bunker played an absolutely vital role in the air defence of the United Kingdom throughout the Second World War and in particular, during the Battle of Britain helping to prevent an imminent Nazi invasion in 1940.

The Discover Aeroplanes event will host an array of activities including the opportunity to use virtual reality headsets to learn how to be a pilot, and an activity trail for families to learn more about World War Two aeroplanes and air defence.

For visitors wanting to try their hand at crafts, an expert will be giving demonstrations on the building and repairing of model planes, and families can also create their own camouflage pattern on paper aeroplanes to take home.

A private showing of Top Gun in the cinema auditorium will be held at 2pm in the Exhibition Centre for a separate charge of £3 per person, and tours of the bunker will be running throughout the day.

Cllr Richard Lewis, Cabinet Member for Central Services, Culture and Heritage, said: "Our Discover Aeroplanes day at the new Battle of Britain Exhibition is a great way to spend Father's Day with all the family. There are loads of activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy, plus the opportunity to handle pieces of aircraft, pilot's uniforms, and issued flying equipment. You can also sign up for one of our five tours of the Battle of Britain Bunker, which served as the Fighter Command Operations Room throughout the Second World War."

The Bunker Exhibition allows visitors to get up close to a full-size replica Spitfire and Hurricane, as well as museum exhibits and interactive displays, a gift shop, a 95-seat auditorium, and educational facilities for schools.

The event is free for Hillingdon residents with a HillingdonFirst card, UK serving and ex-military personnel and for all under-16s.
