Mischievous theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge

News release: 10/7/18 - Children aged four to 11 are being encouraged to become ultimate mischief makers this summer, when the Summer Reading Challenge returns to Hillingdon.

The annual free initiative, which aims to keep children reading throughout the school summer holidays, will begin in all 17 of the borough's libraries on Saturday 7 July and run until mid-September.

The theme of 'Mischief Makers' is inspired by the much-loved iconic children's title Beano, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Dennis, Gnasher and friends will be inviting children to borrow books and pick up a series of rewards for reading, while having lots of fun and adventures in Beanotown.

Rewards will include some playfully naughty toys: a whoopee cushion and a mini water squirter.

Children can also collect Hillingdon Libraries' exclusive Starborg cards - top trump-style cards featuring an array of colourful animal characters - and there will be an opportunity for children to use their artistic talents as part of a competition to design an all new comic strip.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Cabinet Member for Central Services, Culture and Heritage, said: "I would strongly encourage all parents to get their children involved in the Summer Reading Challenge. It is a fantastic, free way to support children's reading throughout the summer and ensure they don't fall behind when they return to school. With all the additional events and activities taking place this year, it promises to be bigger and better than ever."
