Residents encouraged to grow fruit and veg for Autumn Show

News release: 17/7/18 - Hillingdon Council is encouraging adults and children in the borough to enter its blooming marvellous annual fruit and vegetable competition.

The Autumn Show celebrates locally grown produce in Hillingdon and will be held on Saturday 15 September at the Great Barn in Ruislip.

There will be a wide variety of fruit, vegetable and home produce categories on offer, including heaviest pumpkin, matching marrows, jars of jam and chutney, arranged vegetable baskets, herb pots and autumnal decorated cupcakes.

Brian Lawrence, 81 from Hayes End, won three categories at the Autumn Show last year for his medium tomatoes, beetroot and blackberries. He said: "I have an allotment at Wood End Green and I grow almost everything from cabbage, potatoes and beans, to sweetcorn, tomatoes and marrows. I've entered the Autumn Show three years in a row - so this will be my fourth time!"

The competition is open to all ages and abilities and the council is particularly keen to encourage younger residents to get involved, with a dedicated children's section for those under 16 years.

There will also be an art competition for adults and children, with prizes and certificates awarded to first to third place winners.

Councillor Jonathan Bianco, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Finance, Property and Business Services, said "Our Autumn Show has grown in popularity year on year and it's fantastic to see residents, both young and old, growing their own fruit and veg in Hillingdon. This event is a great opportunity for experienced gardeners to exhibit their locally grown produce, and a fun way for novices to try something new! We hope that residents will enter the competition and come along and enjoy the day."

The deadline for applications is Friday 7 September at 5pm.
