Council announces new armistice scholarships to support young residents going to university

News release: 19/7/18 - Hillingdon Council is offering a grant to young residents to cover the cost of tuition fees for the first year of university. The new scheme will mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, as a tribute to the young people who gave their lives in conflict.

The £320,000 bursary fund will support 34 young residents from across the borough, with each individual bursary offering a maximum of £9,250 per student.

To be eligible to apply for the bursary, which is available for one year, applicants must have been born on or after 1 January 1999, have lived in Hillingdon for 10 years and be registered to start a UCAS registered course.

Eligible students will need to submit a written statement of no more than 200 words, including evidence of a strong academic record and an explanation of why they deserve to receive a bursary. Applicants will also need the support of their school or college, and be able to provide any required supporting evidence.

Councillor David Simmonds, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Children's Services said: "In addition to supporting young residents to access apprenticeships and other career opportunities, providing funding for future university students is an appropriate way to commemorate those who lost that opportunity for themselves due to their sacrifice in the First World War.

"The council is offering a bursary up to £9,250 per student towards fees for an undergraduate course in 2018, and we hope that local residents will take advantage of this fantastic opportunity."

For successful applicants, the bursary will be paid in instalments to their chosen university during the first year. The deadline for applications is Friday 31 August 2018.
