Supporting Hillingdon's homeless this winter

News release: 22/10/18 - Hillingdon Council is supporting the borough's most vulnerable residents this winter, with the return of its Winter Night Shelter.

The temporary winter night shelter will offer accommodation, food and housing support to the most vulnerable members of the local community who are without settled accommodation.

This is the thirteenth consecutive year Hillingdon Council has run its winter night shelter. In previous years the shelter has been successful in resettling people into longer-term accommodation, as well as supporting people into work and training opportunities.

The shelter is part of Hillingdon Council's all-year-round approach to supporting rough sleepers in the borough. Over the summer the council set-up a dedicated team of a council officers to work alongside staff from Thames Reach (a homeless charity), Trinity Homeless Projects and Heathrow Travel Care.

They are working with rough sleepers at both Heathrow Airport and across the borough by providing intensive assessments and support in moving into settled accommodation. In September the council helped 12 rough sleepers get off the streets.

Councillor Philip Corthorne, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Social Services, Housing, Health and Wellbeing said: "We are working hard all year round to prevent rough sleeping by putting in the right support from the very beginning. However, for those who do face the terrible prospect of rough sleeping, the winter shelter provides a warm and safe place to stay as well as the help and support needed to begin the journey out of homelessness."

The Night Winter Shelter will run in the coldest months of the year, from January through to March. However, when the shelter closes, Hillingdon Council will continue support those facing rough sleeping through other homeless schemes and referral to external accommodation providers.
