Burials and cremations

Depending on the wishes and religious beliefs of the deceased, you need to decide whether there is to be a burial or cremation.

These details may also be found in the will, if there is one.

If the deceased has not already reserved a plot, one must be arranged and paid for. If no plot has been reserved, and you know of no preference, you must decide where you want the grave to be.

There are seven cemeteries within Hillingdon. Burials are usually held at the following:

  • Northwood cemetery
  • Cherry Lane cemetery
  • West Drayton cemetery

Cremations are usually held at Breakspear Crematorium in Ruislip. Services for the bereaved take place in a peaceful location, with beautiful gardens, natural woodland and tranquil surroundings. When you arrange the cremation service the funeral director will arrange most of the paperwork, but you will need to provide the certificate of burial or cremation given to you by the Registrar.

Scattering of ashes

We do not permit the scattering of ashes or the installation of memorials in our parks and open spaces because the ashes contain minerals in such concentrations that they affect the soil and the plants that grow in the soil which in turn can affect wildlife that relies on the plants for food and shelter.  An alternative for keeping the connection with the borough would be to consider The Gardens of Remembrance or an ashes plot at Breakspear Crematorium.
