Food waste recycling

Let your food waste contribute for composting instead of it being sent for disposal.

Food waste caddy

When you join the food waste collection service you will get:

  • internal kitchen caddy
    • seven litre bin to collect the food waste
  • caddy liners
    • a roll of 52 liners, these liners are to insert into your food waste caddy
    • please store these in a dry place
  • ‚Äčexternal food storage bin
    • a 23 litre bin with self locking lid, to store the full corn starch bags

The food waste bin will be emptied each week by the same crew that collect the garden waste. Please place your food bin with your garden waste at your property boundary for collection. The food waste will make compost along with the garden waste in the West London Composting facility at Harefield. You may use newspaper to line the food waste caddy.

Currently this service is only available for houses and maisonettes that meet the set criteria for garden waste collections. The food waste is collected as part of the kerbside garden waste recycling scheme by the same crew. Blocks of flats do not meet the criteria, and are unable to participate.

Using your caddy

To keep the caddy clean you have been provided with a roll of compostable liners. These are made from corn starch and biodegrade faster than normal plastic bags. Please only use the liners for your caddy. This helps the composting process. Do not use other plastic bags or this will impede the composting of the food waste. Your caddy is also dishwasher proof.

Step 1 - Line with corn starch liner   Step 2 - Add the selected food waste into your caddy   Step 3 - When full, empty your tied bin liner into your green container outside   Step 4 - Put your green external container on the kerbside on your waste collection day
